| A very fine eight legged writting desk made of blackened peer wood inlaid with brass of geometrical pattem. It reveals five drawers with chased gilt bronze handles and key escutcheons, curved legs decorated with female grotesque masks raised on leafy hooves, with inset brown leather top framed with a brass filet with a finely modeled bronze border. Height : 30.12 in Depth : 31.5 in Breadth : 63.78 in : Louis XIV period, circa 1700 These kinds of desks were very innovative for the period, following the classic Mazarin desk with central recess and preceding the four legged bureau plat desk. They were built at the very end of the 17 th century |
